It’s a windy day in New York City, and even the cynical New Yorkers are starting to freak the f&*k out. On the right Hurricane Sandy is heading straight for the city and it is highly possible it may combine with a giant Nor’easter bullying in from the left … what does this mean? That there is potential for this giant never before seen meteorological monster a PR GENIUS recently dubbed
THE FRANKENSTORM
Oh yes, like it or not this literal freak of nature is coming and it’s headed straight for The Big Apple. Sure most sites and news channels are telling you to stock up on batteries, blankets, water, and non perishables …. and ya ya you should do that. But lucky for you this recent New Yorker decided to entertain a collegiate experience in Louisiana i.e. Hurricane Central. I have lived through more than my share of canes, including the infamous Katrina. Sandy aint my first rodeo. What you REALLY need to do to “survive” a hurricane is to plan accordingly …. for your own Hurricane Party. Hurricanes move in slowly, you are completely F&*KED either way, so we down in the bayou have made a kind of tradition of throwing epic bashes while awaiting our impending doom. And trust me … this is the only way to go. So gather some of your friends and read on for some tips on how to really ‘survive’ the storm.
The Subway closes at 7pm tonight, so you need to start getting your act together ASAP. This means after your Duane Reade run you better hit up the liquor store. Themed cocktails are essential for hurricane party fun. For Hurricane Rita we obviously made Marga-RITA’s … easy one. Sandy is a bit tougher. As it is also full on fall I think a little fall flavor is also a necessity and then there’s the whole Halloween aspect … so I came up with this lovely concoction:
THE DARK AND FRANKENSTORMY
(obviously a spin off the “Dark n’ Stormy”)
- 2 ounces dark rum
- 3 ounces PUMPKIN flavored beer (such as Sam Adams Pumpkin Flavored Ale, Southern Tier Pumking, or Dogfish Head Punkin Ale)
- 1 dash angostura bitters
Combine the rum, the pumpkin beer, and bitters in a tall glass full of ice cubes. Stir. The key here is nailing the precise ratio between the spice of the beer and the richness of the rum.
Also no party is complete without a drinking game. So we bring you….
THE OFFICIAL FRANKENSTORM DRINKING GAME
- Copious amounts of alcohol — you’re choice!
- A TV so you can watch weather reports or the news — you best bet is the Weather Channel.
- A designated driver, a place to crash or the taxi’s number — you’re gonna get hammered.
Depending on the number of people participating, you could break-off into teams, or go at it free-for-all style.
Here’s is all you need to play the game:
- Copious amounts of alcohol — you’re choice! Perhaps a Dark n’ Frankenstormy?
- A TV so you can watch weather reports or the news — you best bet is the Weather Channel or NY1.
- A place to crash — you’re gonna get hammered.
Depending on the number of people participating, you could break-off into teams, or go at it free-for-all style.
The Rules
Each person/team picks a term below:
- “Frankenstorm”
- Hurricane Sandy
- Pounded
- Disasterous
- Pre-Halloween
- New York/New York City
- New Jersey
- Choose your own recurring words during the broadcast to add difficulty.
Each time on of the words are mentioned — the person/team with that word drinks.
Social Drinks — Everyone Drinks
- If the weatherman is standing in the storm while it’s pouring, everyone takes two drinks.
- Technical difficulties with a broadcast take a drink.
- Every time the weatherman interviews a person on the streets take a drink — if the person is drunk, incoherent or just plain crazy, take two drinks.
So go out – buy lots of food and yummies to make for your friends and take a cue from this clued in New Yorker:
Get ready New York! Stay safe!
Just because you aren’t on the East coast doesn’t mean you can’t make yourself a Dark n’ Frankenstormy!
